Hi,

I’d like to know if it’s possible to install aolserver on a IBM S390
generation 5 without pain. I have this mainframe and I’m not quite sure if
it’s safe to have aolserver on it

The link bellow has the specs. About it

Is there anybody on this mailing list????

If I get in troubles, I’m afraid the other zones on the mainframe crashes as
well as mine :-)

I’ll give a shot anyway. That the beauty of an attitude behavior!!!

I just need to do backups before

Best,

iuri

Sorry for the delayed response. I'm not aware of anyone testing=20
AOLserver on the platform you describe, and unfortunately do not have=20
access to a similar box to test. I'd be happy to try and help you off=20
list if you run into any issues however. Sorry I can't be of more help!

Yes, there's plenty. The mailing list activity is spiky--some days,
there can be 20-30 messages. Others, none at all.

I think the reason you didn't get a response to your original question
was because either (a) nobody on the list could answer it definitively,
or (b) the people who can answer haven't had a chance to respond, yet.

Isn't the whole point of zones and virtualization the safety that one
zone cannot crash the rest?

....

You originally asked:

I have no idea if AOLserver will run on IBM S390. My gut tells me that
if Tcl will build and run there, AOLserver will to. Caveat: AOLserver
4.5.x brought about a bunch of build machinery changes that may mean it
won't build everywhere Tcl does. If you can't get 4.5 to build, try the
latest AOLserver 4.0 release.

Since tclkit has been built on Linux S390s (slightly more complicated
build since metakit is C++) I'm sure regular tclsh would build fine
too. (See: http://www.equi4.com/pub/tk/downloads.html. Binaries for
Linux S/390 and S/390 64 are both available.)

Alas, I don't have any mainframes to test on first hand either ... :-)

What OS are you running on your s390?

I have a surplus s390 here, but haven't tried to build AOLserver on it. =
It's=20
running Linux.

With the stock s390 OS's, there should be no problem whatsoever; you are =
not=20
at all likely to crash VM with a userspace app.
