IPRIP socket error
|
|
|
| After I get connected to my ISP I am unable to
access any web pages. In the Event Viewer Error Log there
are a series of error messages, all the same:
"IPRIP was unable to create a socket for address
nnn.nn.nnn.n [my IP address]. The data is the error code."
Any idea what this error means and how to solve this?
Thank you.

| Is there a reason why you are running RIP on your machine. If you are not
using it then disable it.

| The good news is removing RIP made the error message
disappear from the log. Thanks.
The bad news is that I am still not getting connected to
any web sites, despite not getting any visible error
messages. I can ping the DNS server IP address, and I can
ping other sites by IP address. But I cannot ping sites
by name - I get "Unknown host" errors.
It seems pretty clear I am having problems with DNS, but I
don't know why or how to fix it. Any ideas would be
welcome.
Thanks.

| Yes, I connect via dialup.
I'm not sure what details will help, but here is some info
from "ipconfig /all" when I am dialed in:

| If you use NSLookup, are you able to connect to your DNS servers? Do they
reply to a query that you put in?
Example:
Default Server: DNS.YourISP.com
Address: A.B.C.D
> www.google.com
Server: DNS.YourISP.com
Address: A.B.C.D
Name: WWW.Google.com
Address: 66.102.7.99
>
If not, you may want to use a network sniffer to verify the packet flow.

| I'd sniff the network. It looks like either the DNS replies are not coming
back to you, or you are dropping them.

| Steve,
Thanks. The manual method on the microsoft page worked.
(Although it wasn't until after I finished restoring
winsock and winsock2 that I saw the following at the
bottom of the page:
"These methods will restore basic functionality to the
Winsock and the Winsock2 subkeys. Some third-party proxy
software or firewalls may have to be reinstalled."
So now I'm not sure what else is not working.)
Thanks for your help.
Paul
