Author An accurate recording of hits and referers? In Webalizer?

I'm not even sure what the best newsgroup for this is...so if you
could let me know, I'd appreciate it.

We're using Webalizer to view our Web site's stats...but we're not
sure how accurate they are. It seems like we should be getting more
hits.
Is there some other way to gauge, compare and contrast, with
Webalizer?
Is that even possible?

I know Webalizer uses the httpd access logs...I guess you can't get
more accurate than that. But I know we're getting people coming from
Google (for example, myself, serching for us, finding us on Google,
and clicking the link), yet Google isn't on the list of referers.

I'm just wondering if it's possible that either access logs might not
be accurate or Webalizer might not process them right.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Every log analyzer have to throw away some log line, since they are
screwed or unclear or doesn't fit what the log analyzer expect. So there
is no such thing as a 'perfect' analyzer. But who really cares?

Maybe the referer is hidden. Again, who cares? An analysys give you
an average count and an idea of how much your site is loaded, what's
the point of having a _perfect_ account? What are you going to do with
such data?

Well, my boss likes to know just how much traffic various sites and search
engines bring to us. So we can focus attention on referers that don't bring
much and reward or continue doing what we're doing on sites that send a lot
of traffic already to us.
It's good to see if certain months have more traffic than others so we can
tell if certain promotions or techniques is bringing in more traffic than
others.
Things like that.

they tend to be unless they're truncated for whatever reasons. and i
don't know webalizer but analog gives number of lines processed and
number of discarded lines in the report. then you can easily compare
wether you get all.
