Apache 2.048 worked for months, now hangs
|
|
| crlackey 2004-08-18, 7:54 am |
| Running Apache2.048 on Windows XP Home.
I have two Virtual hosts. These are personal webs and not very busy...
photo albums and guest books, pc home service and such)
Has been running rock solid since April.
About 8 days ago Apache (or so it seems) hung. I did not know it until
someone sent me a note two days latter... browser message, "Connection
refused"
Nothing abnormal in any of the logs, simply the last successful accesses.
Now that I watch it, the hang occurs several times a day.
Apache Restart does not clear it.
Apathe Stop / Start does clear it.
Q1. How do I get a handle on the problem? Suggestions, tecniques.
Q2. What other groups / forums should I visit?

And what you did about 8 days ago? Updated the antivirus? Changed
the firewall? Updated something else?

| If I did somthing, it was not somthing I remember. I have been trying
to reconstruct last week or two in my dysfunctional mind... still
working on it. Nothing recalled yet. Probably something so ordinary
that it wasn't tagged as significant. I'll post here if I find somthing.

Then is going to be _really_difficult_ to solve.
Well, first thing would be to check the configuration of your firewall
and antivirus. There have been many reports of antiviruses messing with
Apache on Windows. I'd suggest you to switch to Linux, but I'd probably
get the usual "I don't know anything about Linux" or the other usual
"you always bash Microsoft", so I won't...

| I tied to install Suse 8.2 on this new Dell 2400 and it took me two days
to discover that X-windows would not run because no driver for the
onboard video. I could not get anuthing but VGA 16-bit video.
I found source for the appropriate driver but I have no capability to
compile it. So I went back to XP.

| I Uninstalled XP Service Pack 2 which I had installed August 7. I
should know in a day or so if that helps.

The framebuffer driver usually run on everything. Ok, you won't have
hardware acceleration and the like, but those things are usefull only
if you plan to game a lot with the machine. But this is _way_ off topic.
I suggest you google for "dell 2400 linux" if you're interested in that
solution.

Don't put off for tomorrow what you can do today, because if you enjoy
it today you can do it again tomorrow.

| They did not call it SP-2.
It simply was several various updates.
Today I looked in the Control Panel "Add/remove Programs" and I found it
named "Service Pack-2"
Arrggg!
I already knew I should avoid SP-2.

it just hung up again...
--connection refused.
I don't have a clue how to troubleshoot this.

You could consider installing another (old(er)) machine without X. My
server doesn't "do" X (no Xserver and only a handfull of X clients),
still it runs Apache, Sendmail and some other services. You can SSH (or
telnet) to the machine from your Windows box to configure things and
when you really need a X client, you can install an Xserver for Windows
(ReflectionX, Xmanager).
Ok, this was probably more off topic and the OP might not have another
machine to play with.
Back to the problem, some things to try:
netstat -an | find "80"
Does this list a TCP service on port 80?
If so, try this:
telnet localhost 80
After the "Connected to .." message, type:
HEAD / HTTP/1.0
... and give an enter *twice*. Hopefully you'll get some output which
indicate that at least Apache is running propperly.
Goog luck.

| Okay,
here is the latest....
I used Powerquest DriveImage and restored the system drive from March
11, 2004.
The system has run 24 hours now without a hickup.
I will let it go another day, and start carefully applying Windows
updats and testing. I assume a Windows Update BEFORE SP-2 is the problem.

| 48 hours now, still working.
Now I have to add Windows Updates one or two at a time to find out which
one since March 11 is the culprit.
