Author auth/.htaccess/.htpasswd: Works only with text-based browsers

Hi group,

I have a strange problem:

I created .htaccess && .htpasswd with valid contents, set "AllowOverride
All" etc...

Everything is working fine on my local system (WinXP, Apache2, Firefox,
IE6). But on my webserver only textbrowsers like "lynx" give me the
result i expected - a login-"screen".

Using Firefox or IE, my proxy gives me the following error message:

<quote>
The following error was encountered:
* Zero Sized Reply
</quote>

When proxy is disabled (direct internet access through 2 Mbit dedicated
line) Firefox simply does _nothing_ and IE shows the standard error page
("temporarily not available").

Any suggestions/help/hints?

thx
