Rewrite Regex - Perl/Posix??

I know this is probably covered in a document somewhere, but I currently
only have access to Usenet (even then via 3 SSH tunnels bouncing off 3
remote machines - fscking firewalls at customer's site!). Apologies in
advance.

Quick question, do Apache rewrite rules use PERL or POSIX regex?? I'm
seeing some distinct weirdness left around by the previous admin who has
used (apparently) PERL REGEX in rewrite rules which now break the upgraded
intranet fru-fru. I think this is the root of the problem, but would
appreciate confirmation before I start rewriting the rewrite rules.

Apache 1.3 BTW.
