Thanks for help.

| apart from the manual, the best book I read on Apache (simple
straightforward reference)
Apache: the Definitive Guide
but I mean, it all depends what you are going to need to know and why,
its a large subject full of little bits, so you could start off just
googling around for stuff to help you with your immediate needs.
If you like to learn about a cake by looking over the ingredients
google for the RFC's surrounding HTTP protocol, SSL, cookies etc... dry
but hey thats what it comes right down to.
If you are a newbie interested in server side programming youre
probably starting off with xampp, which gets you up and running with an
environment you can use, and just throw stuff up at the server and see
what sticks. You cant beat hands on.

You might give "Apache Server : Administrator's Handbook" by Mohammed J
Kabir a try. It's an invaluable reference for installation, advanced
configuration, and troubleshooting. It covers everything from
implementing mod_perl scripts to defining robust security policies,
etc. It's published by IDG books.
