Author trailing "/r" in logs?

Wondering if any of you have seen the following:

In Apache 1.3.27, with a common log format of:

%h %l %u %t \"%r\" %>s %b

I will "at times" see a trailing "\r" after the remote user ID... for
example:

10.244.96.231 - userfoo\r [30/May/2006:14:54:29 -0700] "GET /admin/
HTTP/1.1" 200 347

At first I thought it only appeared *after* the first hit on a page,
but I can't seem to prove that theory by reproducing it, even after
clearing cache & cookies.

I'd appreciate any insight/experience you may have on this.

Thx,
Rob
