Author Apache 2.0.39 + Applet Process Count

Currently I have a webpage with around 12 applets on it. Using Apache
2.0.39 when any user visits the page, my httpd processes jump up to
around 20 processes per user. In time (around 20 seconds) the
processes will go away and only 4 will be runnning.

I'm not seeing any problem currently but each one of these processes
must be taking up some resources from my machine.

Can anyone explain why all these processes are being created? Is it
my applets that are causing this, or all applets. Finally, is it
neccesary to create these processes and is there a way to avoid
creating them?

Thanks
