Author Expires HTTP header still important?

If my HTTP headers already contain Last-Modified and ETag, is it
really important that I go thru the trouble to ask my provider to add
an Expires header? Even with no Expires header, if the page is
already in a cache, the worst that could happen is a few headers sent
back and forth, no bandwidth wasting GETs, no?
