| Hello,
I have verizon dsl, and they do not allow servers so my questions are this:
1. Even though they dont want me too, can i still host a server?
2. will they be able to detect if i am hosting one against their will?
3. how easy is it to detect if i am running one?
4. if you were in my position, and you couldnt switch ISP's what would you do? | |

| Its fairly easy for anyone to tell if your hosting applications on your DSL line (something I don't recomend BTW) by doing an extremely simple port scan on your IP. I have seen for myself some of the big ISP's using port scans to detect unsanctioned hosts so its not far fetched.
I guess what you need to decide is does your ISP do these scans or something else simular, also if the traffic is minimal, or almost non existant then I would think they would "ignore" it.
Theroretically you could be hosting an AXIS webcam for example, this would look and respond like anyother webserver but is used expressly for views camera streams.
Tthe term "hosting a web server" today could mean a lot of things.

| Thank you very much,
the kind of server i'm looking to host is my business site, i run a wed design company and im tired of paying for hosting services, so i've decided to host it myself. So.....how do i find out if they run these scans?

| There are some scan detecting softwares for win32 machines I belive. I personally have never tried any of them but it is possible to detect some scans with a firewall or sentry software like ZoneAlarm or Kerio Firewall.
Happy Holidays
