Just wondering if there is much difference between Apache and IIS on the
implementation of SSL on the server? Is the secure socket added as a module
to both, or is it handled differently?

I'm also looking for sources of information about setting up a secure
server, if anyone cares to offer any good references. (I'm already working
off Google searches, but wondering if you may have any personally preferred
sites)

Dunno about IIS, but the Apache documention indicates it is (mod_ssl).
Read it for yourself: <http://httpd.apache.org/>
