I am wondering if someone can offer an objective opinion on developing a site in Linux vs. MS .NET.

Here is the background. I am beginning a company that I expect to operationally scale fairly quickly. The maximum number of people hitting the site doing various kinds of processes is 500.

I have heard that .NET is much cheaper and quicker to get going, but that it cannot handle very large loads. I have noticed that the vast majority of large sites is developed for Linux or Unix systems.

Also, we believe that the company will become an attractive target for Google, Yahoo, etc. to acquire. If those sites are built on a Linux platform, would it make it more difficult to sell them a .Net platform business?

Thanks for any objective thoughts!
