Want to build or buy a server...what do i need??

Hi there - not sure this is the right place to post.

I am looking to build or buy a server that can handle streaming media. I've done a lot of surfing but mostly find software needs rather than hardware needs.

I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction or send along some hardware requirements/suggestions. It would be a unix based not windows.
