This maybe a bit old but perhaps helpful anyway. When IBM adds it's
custom SSL support to Apache, it changes some of the key components that
mod_gzip requires to work. There are several patches out there that
supposedly "make it work" but I'm not sure if you could trust them.

My recommendation to you would be just upgrade to IHS 2.0 (mod_deflate)
if you absolutely need HTTP compression.
