Why do I have the following error in my error logs:
ZSRV_MSG0214: Improperly formated certificate or certificate not valid, error = 415.

This is in there at least every one minute if not more often. The site is functioning fine, but why the error??

Do you have any expired certificates in your certificate store?

I sure don't. I just checked all stores and there are no expired certificates or even certificates close to expiration. It is not a real big issue, it is not visible to the user, but it sure does fill my log up and make it that much harder to look at.

Is there some monitoring device that is checking if the server is listening
on port 443? IP sprayers or WebSphere Edge Component (aka edge server)
typically do this to check the availability of server.

Ahh, you think that is causing it?
I do have a web site monitor running off-site so that I can receive email and text msg on my phone if the site goes down. The monitor does a GET HTTPS://Servername.

When an IE browser connects to a server using SSL, it initiates the
connection. This causes us to start the handshake process. When IE
sees the 'Hello' at the start of the handshake, it ends the connection.
This causes a 415 return code message to be in the Apache error log.
Then IE starts another SSL connection, and this one is completed. If
the same browser is used to run SSL to the server, then the first 415
error does not occur. This is only done when the IE browser first
connects to a server.
