Author how to turn off IPV6 in SuSE 9.1?

I've turned off IPV6 support on my older box (running 8.2) and got
much faster page loads by changing the modules.conf file thusly:
(from SuSE support DB,
http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/...zilla_ipv6.html)

If you do not need IPv6 support, deactivate it by changing the file
/etc/modules.conf as follows.

Change

alias net-pf-10 ipv6
#alias net-pf-10 off

to

#alias net-pf-10 ipv6
alias net-pf-10 off

However, SuSE 9.1 uses modprobe.conf.

How do you turn off IPV6 in SuSE 9.1. The above lines don't work.

thanks,
Dave

Okay, got the fix. Replying to my own post so if someone
else is having this problem, they can fix it.

in /etc/modprobe.conf, right below this line:

alias net-pf-10 ipv6

add the following line:
install ipv6 /bin/true

Note: this fix is for SuSE 9.1, 2.6 kernel. The other fix from the
SuSE website (link below) works on earlier versions of SuSE.

credit for fix goes to w4rmc47, who posts on yahoo finance scox
message board.

cheers,
Dave

Thanks for the tip, Dave.

I was wondering about this, since I had noticed slow name resolution on
some sites while using SuSE 9.1.

The fix seems to have made a difference, although I don't have any 'real'
measured data to prove anything. It sure seems more responsive on the
sites I visit a lot.

I submitted this in a bug report to SuSE, although I believe this is
strictly not a bug, but more a problem with how some websites / dns
servers handle IPV6. It was a problem enough for me (I work from home,
and the majority of my time is spent on the web - I trade stocks for a
living) that had I not found the above fix, I'd have had to revert to
an older version of SuSE. Maybe this should be turned off by default,
until
IPV6 is handled better on the majority of the web.

The bad part for me was that www.etrade.com -
where I have my trading account - was one the sites that resovled very,
very slow. In both konqueror and mozilla. It was painful. Thank god I
found how to fix it. Everything else with SuSE 9.1 has been fantastic.
By far the most polished OS I've ever used....

<snip>

I did this for 9.0 and interestingly could no longer access the web page
for my router although web browsing remained unchanged.
