Commerce Studio 5.5 and Windows 2000 Workstation
|

| Daniel R Weber 2004-01-19, 2:48 pm |
| Does anyone know of any reason that Commerce Studio 5.5 would not
run on a Windows 2000 Workstation? The documentation from IBM
says that it must be Windows 2000 Server.

| It should run on a 2k workstation. I have been running it for months. I
think they must have a misprint in the documentation.

| Hi,
From the WC install guide (5.5):
Prerequisite software
You must ensure that you meet the following minimum software requirements
before installing WebSphere Commerce Studio:
v Ensure that you have Windows 2000 Server Edition or Advanced Server
Edition installed with Service Pack 3 applied.
....
That means WC is __officially__ supported on 2000 (advanced) Server only.
It might work on 2000 professional/workstation/etc or even XP, but without
IBM support.
thx.

| So you're saying that in order to receive support from IBM we have to
install Application Developer with the Commerce Studio Enhancements on a
Windows 2000 Server machine? If that's true, that's pretty lame. Who
develops on a server? My company isn't going to pay $1000 to get a Windows
2000 Server license for my PC.

This must be an error in the documentation. I don't see any reason why
you would require server over workstation to do development. Let me look
into this and get back to you with a response to the newsgroup.

| Thanks, it would be great to hear the answer you get. I know that with WCS 5.1
which required you have the actual Commerce Server on the box a Server was
required. But with 5.5 and the WSAD test environment, there is no need for an
install of the Commerce Server software. That is why I am wondering why a Server
is still required.

| Hi,
The studio install guide will be updated to state the requirement is
Windows 2000. (Regardless of edition).
There is no requirement to run Windows 2000 Server for WebSphere Studio
Application Developer (WSAD).
The only reason why server would be a requirement is if you are planning
to run WebSphere Commerce in production under WebSphere Application
Server.Windows 2000 Server would be the suited Windows 2000 edition.
This would be of course for it's prioritization of background processes
and improved TCP/IP socket performance suited for a server environment.
In the case of a development environment Windows 2000
Professional/Workstation would be better suited.
I hope this clears this up. An updated version of the install guide will
become available on our support site
http://www.ibm.com/websphere/commerce shortly reflecting the mention
changes.
