Does anyone have experience or recommendation on using WASv5 for SMTP
mail relays to the internet?

WAS comes with the javamail APIs, but you'd have to write your own SMTP
code. I'd look at James or some similar tool if the primary task you
need done is email.

I am guessing that there is a reason for trying to write a SMTP relay using
WebSphere. Most OS ship with some kind of SMTP relay.
