| Hello,
I'm trying to install Websphere portal express with oracle 8i in my laptop
which has following configuration.
Win2k OS with Service pack 3
Installed MS loopback adapter
When I started installation, it selected Quick install option and it
installed Wepsphere Web and application server
and I got a message saying that it couldn't start the Websphere Admin and
asked me to start manually. I tried to
start it from Windows service but couldn't start it. Due to this I couldn't
complete the install. When i checked the
eveng log I found following error message:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( Websphere ) cannot be found.
The local computer may not
have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display
messages from a remote computer.
The following information is part of the event: IBM WS AdminServer 4.0
status: 10049 Stop:
error in connect 10049
I tried couple of times uninstalling it but getting same error message.
Please help me so that I can finish my install.
Thanks
-Mani

| It looks like the machine host name was not properly set up. You need to
have a fully-qualified host name, something like "mycomputer.mycompany.com".
You need to make sure that the computer name is "mycomputer" and domain is
"mycompany.com". If this is local only, add a line in "hosts" under
C:\WinNT\system32\drivers\etc", as follows:
127.0.0.1 mycomputer mycomputer.mycompany.com.
This way, you can ping your computer by the fully qualified host name.
If you can't start the WebSphere Admin Server, it may be due to the
databases were not created correctly. You need to create proper user IDs for
your dbs for Oracle. Usually database user ids need proper rights. Check the
InfoCenter for details (sorry, I am not an Oracle expert).

| Hi Fang,
Thanks for your help.
I do have the fully qualified host name in my hosts files. I followed the
IBM redbook and installed the MS loopback adapter and I can ping my laptop
using FQN. When I installed my Oracle database I didn't have the MS loopback
adapter and only before installing the portal express I created the loopback
adapter. I'm not sure if I've to reinstall my Oracle database with the
loopback adapter.
Does any one in the group have experienced similar problem?
Thanks for your help
-Mani

| The installer of WPS is like a nightmare, I myself struggled with it for 2
weeks to install it. Try installing WAS by hand and run the installer after
that. This is the best choice when installation of one of the components
fail.

| I'll second that. I got it to work after doing each step manually. It
looks like the setup missed some of the WAS efixs. Love to know if that
was it....
