Portlet Classpath problem with WebSphere Portal Server 5

Nested Exception is java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
org/apache/commons/httpclient/HttpClient

The portlet war-file contains the httpclient jar-file in the WEB-INF/lib
directory. Why do I get the NoClassDefFoundError?
