WebSphere Portal Server - Sametime awareness using 6.5.1

Hi there - has anyone managed to get sametime awareness working with
sametime/domino 6.5.1 and Portal 5.0.2? I have tried installing
sametime/domino 6.5.1 from scratch and upgrading a working 5.0.12/3.0
combination and in neither situation awareness works. Also, the user's email
address does not appear in the people menu (just their name) in both cases
which suggests even basic Domino directory connection is not working.
Nothing in the logs either...
