Author Portal's refusing connections; help!

Good evening, all. I've run into a problem with my Portal installation
and I'm really hoping someone here can help. I ran into some problems
earlier today deploying and removing portlets, and on the advice of our
resident portal expert, I attempted to disable security and enable it
again. I followed the steps in the Infocenter for disabling security.
The disable-security target ran up to the point where it needed to start
the portal server. This failed because the portal server didn't stop as
it was supposed to during this step. I manually stopped and started the
portal server and then attempted to continue the configuration task by
doing "WPSconfig.sh action-remove-deployment-credentials". This step
failed, and the user database no longer contained an entry for oid=10.

I was told that was ok, so I attempted to re-enable security. I was, of
course, unable to log into the portal as wpsadmin (as defined in
wpconfig.properties), however portal startup succeeded. I followed the
Infocenter's instructions for enabling security with our LDAP server and
once again got as far as the last step. This time
action-create-deployment-credentials failed. I unfortunately don't have
the error message in front of me, but I was able to ascertain that
portal is listening for connections on, for example, 9081, but if I try
to telnet to that port, I'm immediately disconnected.

Looking through the .../PortalServer/log/SystemOut.log file it seems
that the startup process was more-or-less normal; I don't see any
egregious exceptions related to this problem. None of the logfiles are
updated when I try to make a request to the server; my connections just
get dropped.

Has anyone got any suggestions for what I might try next?

Thanks,
Brian
