Portlet updated based on change at server

| I need to have a portlet update based on when some data in a database or external service updates the information. For example, if someone changes a record in a database, I would like to have the change reflected in the portlet. Another example might be a stock ticker, where I subscribe to a service that provides stock prices. When the price of the stock changes, I would like to have the portlet show the new price. The update should occur immediately. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. | |

| I'd probably have the portlet poll at regular intervals for updates.
