Author Portlet updated based on change at server

I need to have a portlet update based on when some data in a database or external service updates the information. For example, if someone changes a record in a database, I would like to have the change reflected in the portlet. Another example might be a stock ticker, where I subscribe to a service that provides stock prices. When the price of the stock changes, I would like to have the portlet show the new price. The update should occur immediately. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I'd probably have the portlet poll at regular intervals for updates.
