Accessing original title in PortletTitleListener

As I understand it, PortletTitleListener allows you to override the title of
a portlet by generating it dynamically. What'd I'd like to do is append an
asterisk to the title depending on some condition. I'd like to leave the
title as-is, otherwise.

However, I have not yet seen a way where I can determine the
natural/existing title of the Portlet for me to append an asterisk to. Is
there way way to retrieve the original title?
