I am running some portlets built for 5.0 on 5.1 as well as a portlet service with no noticeable problems. The basic interfaces have not changed (request, response, settings, session, service).

The JDK has gone from 1.3 to 1.4, and I am sure there are implementation changes under the covers, so the only way to be sure is to try it.
