WebSphere Portal Server - access to users group membership

With a basic WebSphere 5.1 Portal install using the default CloudScape DB how do you for any user find out what groups they belong to??

PortletRequest.getUser() gets me the user but how do i get the group for this.

I think this used to be done through a puma package and UserManager and GroupManager classes but i think these are now deprecated with 5.1? I certainly cant find any jars??

Can anyone please drop a quick mail to tell me how to ge this group info or point me at the missing jars if puma is still the method.
