Author Portal - obtaining the installation disks

Hi all,

Can anyone please tell me what the cheapest way is of obtaining the install files needed to setup Portal 5.1?

I'd like to set this up at home so that I study for my 5.1 dev exam, but there doesnt appear to be any trial version available for download.

In order to get my hands on this, do I need to become a member of partner world, or is there another way? If so, could you tell me what level I need and how much this would cost me?

I have tried directing this question to an email address for support at PartnerWorld but have heard nothing...

Thanks in advance for any help,

Ian

I'm not sure if I can answer your question but I can hopefully get you in the right direction.

There're a few options you can investigate in order for you to make a good decission.

If your planning to develop applications using a Portal framework you can go very expensive or ,what I'm assuming you're doing is learning on your own, you should consider alternatives.

A portal framework comes in different flavors. These are just "wrappers" to application servers. These wrappers, frameworks, etc are nothing without a good set of stable portlets. Portlets have an specification (JSR -168 or WRPS) also known as APIs.

So, you'll need two things to get you going. A Portal framework and A Portlet API.

Expensive
IBM Websphere Portal Solution V5.1
IBM Rational Application Developer v6.0.0.1

Alternatives/Open Source
LIFERAY 3.5
Gridsphere 2.0
Pluto
SUN Portal Server

ETC. You should always keep in mind you want a Framework that support JSR-168 and Portlet APIs tha comply to JSR 168. Is your safest route.

Have fun,
Robert

You can download Rational Application Developer (RAD) from IBM website and prepare yourself with Portal 5.0 Test environment. As of now, you cannot download Portal 5.1 test environment as a developer.
