how to backup the portal?

| is there a convenient way to backup/restore the portal install?
I am quite flustered by the situations wherein portal becomes un(usable) on account of properties munging I do, to configure it, in attempt to achieve the right combination. Sometime, the portal gets totally busted and have to prey a lot for it to come to
a sane state back again.
Is there a way, I could back it up and restore it back in case of screw-up?
I use rh linux.
Which directories are ok to tar and store in backup image?

| If you happen to be using Cloudscape you might be okay by tar'ing the
WebSphere directory itself after the install.
In other cases, I have just zipped up a copy of the Cloudscape portal dbs
themselves.
