Portal Search in a cluster--why remote?

According to the InfoCenter: "In order to support search in a clustered environment, install and configure the search service remotely...that is, on a remote WebSphere Application Server node which is not part of the WebSphere Portal cluster."

Can anyone explain why the search server cannot be a member of the Portal cluster?
