Preferences Storing JSR 168 gives javax.portlet.ReadOnlyException:

Hi,

We are trying to remote consume a portlet that is deployed in an App server and consume it within IBM Portal versioned 5.1.0.1.

We are trying to store something in the preferences something like this
PortletPreferences prefs = request.getPreferences();
prefs.setValue("userName",request.getParameter("username"));
prefs.store();

and we are getting a ReadOnlyException

any pointers towards sorting this will be higly appreciated.
