Author How to achieve the functionality of editing the defaults using IBM

Hi experts,
Since IBM portlet API supports Edit mode only and not 'Edit Defaults mode', how can we store the default prefrences of a portlet.
I have a situation, please let me know how can I implement it using the IBM portlet API. The situation is like:
When a publisher publishes a portlet for the first time, he is allowed to set some some defaults. And once he sets these defaults, all the other users can view those defaults and customize some other preferences (not the default ones). The other users sho
uld not be prompted for setting the default preferences that have already been set by the publisher.

My question is how does the IBM portlet API take care of providing a solution that is provided by other portals that do support 'Edit Defaults mode'?

Many Thanks for all the replies in advance,
The replies are really going to help me to move further in this issue which is still open.
