Hi Jim, 
 
I write a method which accepts the logged in user id as an argument and it will return the group id/name for the loggged in user. 
 
when i logged in as an administrator id like "wpsadmin" , the method is invoked successfully and the group id is returned successfully as a "wpsadmins". 
The Problem is if i logged in as an user like "wpsuser" , the method is invoked successfully and the group id is returned as null. when i troubleshoot this i came to know the SPI methods are not returning any values. 
 
For your information, i already given access for this portlet to all the logged in users.
