Scenario:

The user buys products and finally decides to check out. I want the checkout page to be in SSL as users confidential information would be used. After checkout i want to redirect the user to the home page.

So ...upto the point of checkout its HTTP
checkout in HTTPS
after checkout back to HTTP

How to achieve this in Portal.

Please advice the best approach to solve this scenario.

I don't think you can do this. You can have SSL for just the login (so
the password is not sent in the clear) or for all pages but you cannot
set selected pages to use SSL while others do not
