Yes, you can setup SSL for Portal.

First, keep in mind that portal is an enterprise application.

As such the configuration of SSL will involve configuration of the underlying WebSphere Application server as well as the external HTTP server.

There is an abundance of information about this in the Information Center and in IBM WebSphere Application Server V6 Security Handbook, SG24-6316-00

Pay particular note to section 6.2.1.
