That is not necessary true. I did not analyze the source code, but they use an AddressType object. From the article:
"The class="java.util.Hashtable" attribute specifies the name of the <b>class which C2A uses for matching the message</b>, in addition to the message type (AddressType). "

They use the Hashtable because the C2A. But inside the hashtable there is an instance of the object AddressType, and is this object that trigger the ClassCastException.

You should take a look to a more recent article about interportlet comunication. C2S is used with IBM portlets, and you should use the JSR-168 Portlets.
