Hello Edge Server Forum readers,

Looking for info on the LB (Load Balancer) capabilities of the Edge
Server
I came across the following abstract at the URL below:
http://www-3.ibm.com/software/webse...ver/lbfeat.html

<------------------- s n i p ------------------------------>
Kernel-Level Content-Based Routing (CBR) allows improved, high
performance layer 7 HTTP request routing. Requests may be routed based
on URI or any combination of HTTP headers providing maximum flexibility
in server farm and application deployment.

Proxy-Level Content-Based Routing (CBR) provides the same level of
improved layer 7 HTTP routing function as kernel-level CBR, but adds the

ability to look inside secure HTTPS requests as well. Additionally,
proxy-level CBR can be used as a "plug-able" load balancing solution
within the proxy itself, providing unparalleled integration with other
proxy cache functions.
<------------------- s n i p ------------------------------>

Does this means that all replies from the WAS will also go through the
LB on their way back to the reverse proxy (since the LB is acting as an
HTTP -i.e. layer 7- proxy rather than a layer 3 LB). Therefore the
Reverse Proxy Edge server will only ever see the IP address of the
Dispatcher/LB (and not of the individual WAS as previously feared).

Any advise will be much appreciated.

Nick,

The kernel content-based routing method is a simple proxy. Clients will
be talking to the cluster it controls and the back-end servers will be
talking to the return address in the cbr configuration. Kernel CBR will
not be doing anything to the data in the HTTP body itself though...links
in pages must be relative links or use the external cluster address.
You would need to use the Caching Proxy/CBR setup if you need to
rewrite data as it passes.

Which method are you asking about? The Caching Proxy/CBR setup or the
kernel CBR setup (no Caching Proxy)?

Jeff
