Below is a list of kernel 2.2 packages (by source package) and packages
(build-)depending on them.

kernel 2.2 image packages packages:

arm:
- kernel-image-2.2.19-netwinder
- kernel-image-2.2.19-riscpc

m68k:
- kernel-image-2.2.25-amiga
- kernel-image-2.2.25-atari
- kernel-image-2.2.25-bvme6000
- kernel-image-2.2.25-mac
- kernel-image-2.2.25-mac-udeb
- kernel-image-2.2.25-mvme147
- kernel-image-2.2.25-mvme16x

powerpc:
- kernel-image-2.2.10-powerpc-apus

sparc:
- kernel-image-sparc-2.2

kernel 2.2 patch packages:

Architecture support:
- kernel-patch-2.2.20-arm
- kernel-patch-2.2.25-m68k

Other patches:
- kernel-patch-2.2.17-vm-global
- kernel-patch-2.2.18-vm-global
- kernel-patch-2.2.19-reiserfs
- kernel-patch-2.2.20-p3
- kernel-patch-2.2.20-raid

kernel source package:
- kernel-source-2.2.25

other packages:
- boot-floppies
- kernel-headers-2.2.25-m68k
- lids-2.2

To my current knowledge, all of them can be removed with the following
exceptions:
- kernel-image-2.2.25-mac
- kernel-image-2.2.25-mac-udeb
- kernel-patch-2.2.25-m68k
- kernel-source-2.2.25

Are there any other packages in the list above that have to stay?

You can't remove the sparc ones. 2.2 is the only thing that runs stable
on sparc32's (all sparc32's).

This one does. There is no 2.4 kernel yet that functions on all m68k
macs (and, most likely, there will never be one; but the 2.6 series
should support macs on a bright day)

> - kernel-image-2.2.25-mac-udeb

This one can go. In fact, a bug to drop it has already been filed...

OK.

Package: kernel-image-sparc-2.2
Binary: kernel-headers-2.2.20-sparc, kernel-image-2.2.20-sun4cdm,
kernel-image-2.2.20-sun4dm-smp, kernel-image-2.2.20-sun4u,
kernel-image-2.2.20-sun4u-smp
Version: 9
Priority: optional
Section: base
Maintainer: Ben Collins <bcollins@debian.org>
Build-Depends: egcs64, gcc (>= 2.95.2-4.1), kernel-source-2.2,
sparc-utils, bzip2

If they are still required for sparc32, at least the following needs to
be done to get this package into a good shape:

- drop kernel-image-2.2.20-sun4u and kernel-image-2.2.20-sun4u-smp
(and perhaps kernel-headers-2.2.20-sparc)
- remove build dependency on egcs64 (no longer in unstable and not
required for sparc32)
- Build-Depends: kernel-source-2.2.25
- s/2.2.20/2.2.25/g

Leave all of these.

Amiga is the only m68k subarch that I know is capable of using 2.4.x
kernels. However, not all amigas run stably with 2.4.x kernels. The
mac port seems to have recently been energized to support 2.6.x, but
that's still a work-in-progress. Very few if any macs run 2.4,
although there's also some porting work going on there.

My plan is to release d-i with 2.2 kernels for all m68k subarchs,
excepting amiga.

This is only a woody package. It doesn't actually build in sarge
anymore, and i have asked for the removal of this package (or the
security team did so, will have to check) from sarge/sid in favor of the
2.4.x packages (2.4.20 actually in sarge/sid, 2.4.25 just uploaded).

The point of this cleanup is that Debian 3.1 will ship with
kernel 2.4 and 2.6, but not with kernel 2.2.

The security team has already stated that they will not support three
major versions of the kernel in Debian 3.1.

Greetings! Pardon my ignorance, but are the raid and SSE patches
already backported into 2.2.25? I'm assuming Debian will continue to
offer the 2.2 series. If so, and if .25 doesn't already contain them,
the raid and SSE patches are important, I think -- the vm-global much
less so. I can update these for the last 2.2 kernel if desired.

Take care,

Can definitely be removed since I am thinking about orphaning the lids
packages at all. But you'll hear from me about that.
