ISO 3166 and ISO 639 maintenance agencies official sites are the most
appropriate. Both have really useful FAQs for understanding some
specific points such as the official name for "Taiwan".....

I don't have the URLs ow (and I'm offline, but googling "ISO 3166
maintenance agency" should point you to the appropriate place).

Of course, I can also point you to Alastair McKinstry great work on
http://packages.debian.org/iso-codes

I plan to mention these subjects in a talk about i18n/l10n I proposed
for debconf4...
