Author Bug#239653: ITP: fcracklib -- a Free/Fast Zip Password Cracker
Francesco Donadon

2004-03-23, 4:35 pm

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

Package name : fcrackzip
Version : 0.3
Upstream Author : Marc Lehmann <pcg@goof.com>
URL : http://www.goof.com/pcg/marc/fcrackzip.html
License : GPL
Description : a Free/Fast Zip Password Cracker

fcrackzip is a free password cracker for zip files.

It is able to perform brute force or dictionary based attacks and allows
to resume the cracking from the point when it was interrupted.
(only manually at the moment, but automatic resuming it's a planned
feature).

Is "free" really an intesting thing to put in a Debian package description?

There are several of these; how about mentioning in the description the
features that make this stand out from the others (john, crack)? All
I see in this description is a feature that it doesn't have.

That's right. I just copied verbatim the short description in the
upstream web page, whitout turning my brain on.
It would be better (and Policy complaint) "zip password cracker",
or "password cracker for zip archives".
Hmmm, the second one is better, isn't it?

Did You notice the "zip" part of the description?
This program cracks the zip archives protected with a password...
AFAIK neither john or crack are able to do this. At least, their man
pages does not mention it anywhere. Neither I found anything similar
querying apt-cache with "zip", "password" or "crack".

I will retitle the bug with the correct short description.
I must also remember to rip off "free" from the long one.

Bye,
Francesco

No; my brain probably doesn't register ZIP unless it's capitalized.
s/Zip/ZIP/

I don't think so.

Short description for "zip": Archiver for .zip files

Short description for "unzip": De-archiver for .zip files

From zip's man page:
The zip program puts one or more compressed files into a single zip
archive, along with [...] An entire directory structure can be
packed into a zip archive with a single command.

IMHO "zip" should not be capitalized

Cheers, Francesco

I disagree, based on many years of seeing and spelling "ZIP", on PKZIP,
etc.

I don't care enough to argue about it, though.
