i just tried this on an ultra5 running sid, and can replicate
the problem by zooming out to 400%. before crashing it uses about 85%
of memory on a 128MB system, though it *is* a pretty hefty pdf so
maybe that's typical...
these are the versions or xpdf* and tlib1 i have installed, fwiw:
ii libt1-5 5.0.2-2 Type 1 font rasterizer library - runtime
ii xpdf 3.00-6 Portable Document Format (PDF) suite
ii xpdf-common 3.00-6 Portable Document Format (PDF) suite -- comm
ii xpdf-reader 3.00-6 Portable Document Format (PDF) suite -- view
ii xpdf-utils 3.00-6 Portable Document Format (PDF) suite -- util
