Author dpkg postinst.d patch: progress ping

hi there,

i've taken on responsibility for checking the progress of various
issues related to Debian / SE / Linux. one of the things needed
for SE/Linux is, as you are no doubt aware, a requirement for a
means to set file security contexts when a new package is installed.

i was wondering what the present status is, so that i can add it
to my progress report.

here is what i have so far for dpkg:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=249496
http://lists.debian.org/debian-dpkg...3/msg00154.html
http://lists.debian.org/debian-deve...3/msg02063.html
http://lists.debian.org/debian-dpkg...5/msg00255.html

status:

mr russell coker's postinst.d patch is apparently well-known
and the bugreport has been merged with other bugs, one of which
(#17243) dates back to 1998! kuudosss. however, the maintainer
says that those bugs are part of a larger picture of required
/ requested functionality and they don't want to proceed with
what would turn out to be a temporary measure.

30may2004: after evaluating options (see links above) initiated
thread to convince dpkg developers to incorporate postinst.d
patch.

13jun2004: no response yet received, another ping initiated.

The status is unchanged from when you last asked.

Correct.

Not Going To Happen.

As I've already said, and has been outlined in countless threads about
this in the past, "/etc/dpkg/postinst.d" is not a complete solution to
the whole triggers problem and on that basis has been rejected.

There's been some useful discussion in the past about good ways to
schedule commands to be run after dpkg has completed its run, but it's
way off the radar at the moment. Feature requests like this are post-
sarge at least!

Sure it's post-sarge, but we still have to work on it now if we want to get=
it=20
in the next release. I expect that last-minute changes to dpkg aren't=20
desired...

You misunderstand ... it's dpkg post-sarge, therefore sarge+2 for
stable/unstable bridge support.

scott,

could you kindly provide me with some references and/or keywords
that i can search google with which will enable me to find such
references for myself?

i'd like to add them to the status report for completeness.

thanks,

i must apologise for not having been involved in the discussions
that you refer to.

scott, hi,

some references to such discussions would be much appreciated.

so that a specification can be drawn up, agreed on, and then they
can be implemented.
