Do you think rsync is such a good idea for the job?

For example running rsync to mirror the debian-amd64 archive
(source+amd64) from alioth takes sometimes longer than an hour just
for the file listings.

An intelligent mirror script that looks at the Packages/Sources files
is much more efficient and creates less load on the server and client.
