Keeping track of DSFG-free and non-free licenses
|
|
| Parsons, Drew 2004-07-28, 6:23 pm |
| I notice our free-software page, the one that points to the DSFG text
(http://www.debian.org/intro/free), refers to a couple of sample free
licenses (GPL, BSD et al).
I think it would be a useful resource if this page would also refer to
examples of licenses that Debian considers DSFG-nonfree (e.g. GFSDL, XFree86
1.1, etc), with a brief summary of why they do not meet our guidelines.
My motivation for asking for this is that my Xprint upstream author prefers
ksh93 to bash, and would prefer it if we were to use it. Looking into
ksh93, AT&T has now released it as open-source, but the licence
(http://www.research.att.com/sw/license/ast-open.html) has enough if's and
but's that it is not obvious to me whether or not it is DSFG-free.
After debian-legal goes to all the trouble of determining whether some
licence is free or not, it would be useful for their decision to be
displayed, so others can easily see the decision later, without having to
waste time searching through the mailing list. It could perhaps also serve
as a kind of "shame file", encouraging upstream authors to consider changing
their program to a DSFG-free licence.

This already exists: http://www.debian.org/legal/licenses/
I didn't annouced or linked this very "visible" yet as there are ongoing
discussions on d-legal how to do this right. If you want, I can dig in
the list's archives for some pointers.

Always entertaining to read this on a Debian mailing list *g*

Keeping track of licences for prospective new packages is of interest to all
developers.

Ah yes, that looks like just what I had in mind. A simple link from
http://www.debian.org/intro/free would keep me happy (given that ../free is
linked from the Debian home page). I don't need to read the discussions
about it in the archives, it's enough for me just to know the page has
already been thought about.

Indeed ;) The stupid institution where I work (and live - I have boarding
arrangements here) applies unhelpfully draconic restrictions on email going
out from it (no foreign domains, even if you're authenticated to their
server), so I can't use my own email while I'm in here. So I have to use my
official work email even when I'm dealing with my own personal business
after hours. *sigh*
Thanks for the link to your licences page.

I don't follow the d-legal discussions, just wanna mention that I would
be pleased to see an entry on this license list of the RPSL (see [1])
provided with a `free' label.

Correct. So is keeping track of how close we are to finishing
debian-installer (-boot), what happens to policy (-policy), how our
ports are doing, (too many lists to list them all), and so on. That
doesn't mean we have to discuss all of that on this list.
Even if I agree this is a worthy cause, please discuss this on -legal,
where it belongs. If/when you create some web page, you can always
announce it on -devel-announce, if appropriate.
