They did no such thing. As the previous maintainer, I set the
maintainer to Debian QA, which is the *right and proper thing to do*
until the new person actually makes an opload. I am not presently
maintaining the package, and neither are you. QA is the right place for
it to be.

Did you even read the changelog at all?
gif2png (2.4.7-2) unstable; urgency=low
* Orphaning this package.

See, *I* orphaned it. That is the latest release. Nobody on the QA
team has done a thing with the package.
(BTW, I believe liw may be preparing an upload as well.)

What QA package?
Debian packages cannot be "reverted". They can only be superceded.

No, it's quite clear that Lars just forgot to change the maintainer name
in his upload. That was not a QA upload.

As John mentioned, it was him who did the assignation to the QA team, as
is proper procedure when orphaning.
What was not proper procedure was that I didn't re-title the bug to
indicate that I wanted to adopt the package. I only sent mail (on July
26, to debian-devel, two days before your ITA) that I intended to do so.
Nor did I follow the WNPP bug and didn't realize someone else wanted the
package. I don't read -mentor (nor -devel anymore), either. My
apologies.
I have just uploaded a new version (2.4.7-3). It indicates that I'm the
new maintainer and also fixes bug (#258822, manual page formatting
error). I would have uploaded earlier, but I was busy and wanted to fix
the bug before I uploaded, so as not to upload only to change
maintainership information.
If you wish to take over maintenance for the package, I'll be happy to
give it to you and sponsor uploads (though I may be slow with that,
depending on work pressures). It would probably be best to wait for a
while before a new version is uploaded, to avoid putting unnecessary
pressure on the buildds right now, they seem to be overloaded. I sent
the web2png.xml patch to ESR, who said he'd be making a new release
soonish (possibly with no other changes, though), and waiting for that,
at least, would be good.

QA does not adopt packages. I think that liw made an upload, and if his
intention was to adopt the package, he forgot to update the Maintainer
field.
Please contact liw (liw@iki.fi) and ask him

QA uploaders generally do respect ITAs, in my experience. Sometimes
mistakes happen.

If you do another upload be real quick about it. With all the backlog
it is likely the backage has not yet progressed to building on the
laged arches. If you upload a new version it replaces the one in the
queue.

Erik,
I think we all do appreciate your enthusiasm here. I think it is great
that you found something that looked that it needed fixing and wanted to
fix, so please don't let us discourage you from doing that again :-)
Having said that, and this is an observation directed not just to you
but to us all -- let us not immediately ascribe to malice actions that
may have a benign explanation. It could help save us a lot of flames.

The QA group doesn't adopt packages, they are the _default_ owner of
any package and bug if nobody is the current maintainer. So, as the
package is currently orphaned, they are mentioned currently.

Well, finding a sponsor is sometimes rather difficult. I'm sorry, but
that's just the current situation. I know that it's rather frustrating
(and I can well remember the time where it was frustrating for me, and
I had to trap sponsors on IRC). I know that this answer is not as
nice as it should be, and I feel sorry for this.
Cheers,

yes you are right. i think it is a pity. specially for new contributors
of the debian project it can be very frustrating.
bug i think if 50% of the current developers would sponsor 2 packages it
doesnt have to be such a problem (maybe i am too optimistic)
