Author Snort packages up for adoption

Fellow DD's,

I'm putting the Snort packages up for adoption.

I no longer have the time to package new upstream versions, fix the
problems that are pending and find a girlfriend...

But, thanks to the many help from other Debian folks, the Snort packages
have become what they are today. In comparison to the packages in
stable, quite an improvement!

Now I need someone with bright, new ideas, a view for the future and
some spare time. So that's probably someone who is married. ;))

The package has a lot of bugs assigned to it, but alot of these bugs are
fixed in the current Sid packages and are maintained purely for
archiving purposes. The 'Serious Policy Violation' bug is caused by
changed Build-Depends.

First one to reply to this post on this list takes the packages!

Thanks,
Sander.

There are a lot of simple-to-fix bugs, e.g. wishlist bugs related on debconf
translations.
It would be nice, if you do this easy work on snort, before you give it away.
So we get a real chance to see this work in sarge.

Despite I'm the first replyer, I wouldn't like to adopt it. ;-)

Erik

This really does seem like a package crying out for a team
maintainence.

One nice thing to see would be a mechanism such as clamav's for
downloading updated rules from a central place (Alioth?) which
might avoid a repeat of the outdated-rules-in-woody problem. Although
I appreciate that often engine upgrades mean that new rules cannot
be applied simply.

Serious users will probably want to use oinkmaster and snort.org
rulesets anyway.

I'll see what I can do to fix some of the bugs like the new upstream
version that is available & .po updates.

Sander.

Well, Pascal Hakim tried to help me set up an alioth project for Snort,
but he was busy studying, and I was busy switching jobs so nothing
really happened.

I don't know if Snort has to be team-maintained. The real problems are
the backports for stable users, and the rewrite of scripts to allow
multiple sensors on the same machine... Some work has been done already,
thanks to the help of others. Debconf needs to be changed, etc.

I just don't have time to do that. But I guess a team of two will do ;)

Regards,
Sander.
