| Listening to BBC world service right now - good mentions of Linux, Open
Source, Hacker Ethic - and specifically Ubuntu (mentioned as derived
from Debian Linux). Go Digital - on air and on line
Also mentioning "open source ethic" as a possible way of developing
e.g. drugs and other collaborative developments and that Linux
enthusiasts came along to advise/share experience.
GO DEBIAN

For those who've missed the first three broadcasts today, there's one more at
01:05 GMT; also see <URL:http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/1478157.stm>.

Why on earth does the BBC force its listeners to all hit its servers
at the same time. Doesn't make sense at all, why not ogg the program
up and put it on its servers so the audience can listen when they
want.
Okay, so I know the answer. The BBC is still coming to grips with the
idea that "boradcasting" is dead. The tech generation wants to time
and space shift programming to a convenient time/location.

Hmm? I made use of a DVB-T card. (I could have listened via a DAB radio too.)
Put the name of a nearby city into the appropriate text box on the World
Service home page and you will find other ways in which you could have
listened to that programme. ;-)

The decision doesn't have to be logical; it was unanimous.

Um, they don't. Click the "audio / 14K modems" link near the top of that
page to get a RealAudio feed.

Huh? You can listen to the programme any time you like. (Admittedly you're
restricted to RealPlayer or Windows Media Player, but at least there are
cross-platform players available for RealPlayer.)

You can do exactly that. The vast majority of the BBC's radio output is
available to listen to whenever you want, up to a week after broadcast,
and has been for some time.

Could you point me at a RealPlayer for each and every platform Debian
supports?

No, but real player's core (Helix Player) is open source. The codecs are use
restricted to personal use, and the codec source is available *for porting
only*, under a a binding contract. (This they label a Eula, but you must
print it, sign it, and send it in, so there is no doubt that it is legally
binding.)
RealMedia is apparently even kind enough to offer the RealPlayer branded
version of the Helix player under (GPL|| RPSL).
THE POINT:
Therefore it is theoreticly possible to obtain or make a realplayer branded
player with full support for the RealVideo and RealAudio for any playform
Debian is available on.
Note: RealPlayer 10 branded helix player + RealCodecs 10 != RealPlayer 10
Linux.
The difference is that Realplayer 10 Linux includes a few additional
components. (Flash, Mp3, etc.)
Summary:
Helix:
(GPL||RPSL)
RealPlayer branded Helix Player:
(GPL||RPSL) [TRADEMARK restrictions would apply]
RealPlayer's Codecs:
Non-Libre, Gratis personal use [EULA]
RealPlayer Codec Sources:
Non-Libre [Gratis binding EULA/NDA]

By now, there is also a "download as MP3" link available. And it seems
to work fine.
