Weird, Weird, Weird FCS Disconnect Problem |
 |
 |
|
|
04-07-05 10:57 PM
I am having the weirdest thing happen with one of my fcs apps.
Before may times we had users say oh I cant get connected, so we did the
tunneling ting and that let them in.
But has anyone ever had the problem of a user not getting disconnected.
Here is scenario:
The users is closing an Internet Explorer window that has an fcs app
running in the window. The users is not getting disconnected from the
fcs server, he is actually staying logged into server and even able to
broadcast his audio to other users.
When all other users close the window they do get disconnected, but this
one guy is able to stay connected after the window is closed. Any ideas?
He does however get disconnected if he closes the main website window
that open the other window to hold fcs app. So image he click a link on
a page that opened a new fcs app window. He does chat and when he is
done he closes window, and is still on the website that he clicked
originally to open window. He is still broadcasting now and that window
is long gone, he can browse the site and stay connected, but if he
closes, actually closes main website window he is disconnected.
This is the strangest thing I have ever seen!

(obvious question) Are you sure the main window has:
- no flash
- if it does have Flash, it's not doing any FCS code
???

I've had audio continue for a second, even after the browser window closed.
I just reckoned that was the Flash thread continuing because it had cleanup
work to do... but I eventually was disconnected.
How long does homeskillet stay connected for?

I remember Jayson had the same problem with a user on his site. The user's
video was playing for over an hour AFTER he had closed the window....
It's either a browser or flash plugin problem.
I would suggest that you put a logout button on the page and then warn all
users of what could possibly happen if they don't press that before closing
the window. It's not the developers fault.

I remember this from way way waaaaay back. Somehow the browser hung on to
the FCS. Thinkign about it, I think it only happened with IE and only when
using the Communication Comps - but I could be wrong.
You are using FCs 1.5.2, right? Also are you sure you have the latest
component set (if you are usign the components).
If you try Firefox, what happens? If you try a simple app without
communication components, what happens?

I am going to try and reply to all emails in this one.
Ok I will have him try Mozilla but as far as I know he is only using IE
and its only him that it happens too.
He is staying connected for awhile, so like when we were on the phone
testing this morning it was like at least 10 minutes before I told him
go ahead and close the main page to kill connection.
I can tell users to hit close button but that wont make for sure they do
it so.
What I am thinking is maybe test some of the shared objects I am making
and see if they are still connected or if any part of the apps get
shutdown when the users closes and if its just audio staying connected
then maybe we can test for the video shutoff I know there is a method
somewhere.
I think it is 1.5.2 FCS and no fcs components all programmed stuff

Do you guys know of a method that might do this before I beat the bush
waiting for my bird to fly out.
I am really good with FCS, and I know there is something in my code
somewhere to test and see if they are still there, but its so hard to
make sure it works for everyone sometimes it just makes me so mad I
wanna become a garbage man or something that uses no brains,

I'm full of crazy ideas:
- put an onUnload in your all of your Flash components that have nc's; make
sure it disconnects from ns, so, and nc's in that order via nc.close(); etc.
- if there already are onUnloads there, remove them, maybe it's ticking
Flash off
- use a ping from the server, but the client has to be able to successfully
create a movie clip at some depth; if it can't do this, it's some insane
thread still running with no gui, and thus you can (somewhat) confirm the
server isn't really talking to a valid, running Flash client, but some
undying thread

This is just a stab in the dark really, but what I think is happening is
that the driver to the audio or video or both is not letting the browser or
plugin go, so what is happening is that the flash file is staying in memory.
In other words, if I am correct (which I have no idea.. ) the ideas of
unloading, or checking for the client won't work.
I myself have never seen this happen, not to say it doesn't happen, but it
seems to be a rare occurence. One suggestion might to be to ask that user
to upgrade/reinstall the drivers and give it another shot? Does it happen
every time to that user?
dunno.. just stabbing in the dark
