I want to pass my Dell deminsion L550 computer on to my

install a clean Windows 98.

Hi,

I recommend using free KillDisk software to erase your drive. KillDisk erases the whole
HDD, it is impossible to recover any data after using it. KillDisk also supports some
highly secure erase algorithms such as DoD M5220 and Guttman's. After using KillDisk yo
u should re-partition and re-format your drive to use it from scrath. Head to www.
killdisk.com for more info and download.

It is NOT impossible to recover data after scrubbing a drive. Just beyond
the capabilities of probably anyone but a VERY good data recovery lab and
the government.

The DoD M5220 and Guttman's Wipe are NOT algorithms, they just define how
one should wipe the disk. Guttman's wipe is pointless if it's a newer disk,
and he says so in his paper. If you want to make a disk as unrecoverable as
possible, just wipe it as many times as you can with random data.
