I think it is the NTFS file system that is the culprit. I've found that
when backing up XP based computer to removable media, those with the
FAT32 file system copied more slowly than removable media with the NTFS
file system.
The problem with XP is that it is hard to get all the background
processes closed. With win 98 I could close down everything except two
files, systray and explorer, and it would back up everything with no
errors, and restore with no errors as well.
I've been checking around and in many instances with the XP OS, you
have to purchase the software to back up open files separately from the
base backup program itself.
Or if a backup program comes with the ability to backup open files in
win xp, it costs way more than most other basic backup programs. I
think it is the nature of the beast that the NTFS file system is harder
to backup than the FAT32 file system.
